Launching BlenderAVC

Did you run out and buy an AVCHD camcorder such as the Canon HF100? Cool, huh? Did you then to try edit the video? Have you tried in vain to find a good free/open-source (FOSS) non-linear video editor (NLE)? If you answered yes to these questions, you may be interested in BlenderAVC, a new “glue” tool which makes it easier to use AVC video in Blender’s Sequence Editor.

This project is Windows-only and is licensed under the GPL. It is in “beta” status, and should only be used by those who are comfortable with the command line. Let me know what you think!

Welcome!

OpenFilmmaking is a site dedicated to spreading the word about production-ready free and open-source (FOSS) tools. However, the best tool is useless unless it can fit into a production environment. Our focus is on how people are using these tools efficiently and effectively in their workflows.

We encourage every project to make at least some of their content available (using Creative Comments licenses, typically), but we use all the meanings of “open filmmaking” –

  1. open-content project
  2. proprietary project using FOSS tools, or
  3. somewhere in between.

On our wiki, will be hosting “workflows,” or “stacks,” of FOSS tools and describe how they work together in an effective way. In some cases, we will encourage development of new tools, such as BlenderAVC, currently in active development.

I will also be blogging about my own experiences in filmmaking; tips and tricks for getting professional results, and my 20-year plan to create a feature film.

Stay tuned!
