It’s the workflow, stupid!

What’s open filmmaking?

Open filmmaking is:

  1. Collaborative filmmaking — An entire community organically creates a film using wikis and other collaborative tools. See The Mashup Movie.
  2. Open content filmmaking — All assets are released under free licenses, but the film may otherwise be created in a traditional way. Generally free/open-source tools are used. See Orange and Peach projects.
  3. Creating a film using free/open-source tools — The film and its assets may not be open-licensed, but free tools are used. Often the project contributes back improvements to the tools See Plumiferos.

Open filmmaking is being able to involve the audience in the creative process.

Open filmmaking is not being locked into a vendor’s byzantine licensing scheme or upgrade schedule. It is not having to worry if your most critical tool will disappear due to a merger or acquisition. It is being able to customize your tools and share them with your friends.

We are not purists when it comes to the definition, but we do encourage all projects to contribute back code, scripts, tutorials, documentation, and assets such as textures or 3D models.
